kamakura Bori

Japanese traditional craft Over 800Years

At HAKKODO, we design, manufacture and sell Kamakura-bori products. Kamakura-bori is carved lacquer-ware that is made by shaping natural wood which is then carved with a chisel, and layers of natural lacquer (tree sap) are applied to it with a brush.

History

Kamakura was where the first Samurai government appeared in Japan at the end of the 12th century, and where a unique culture formed with the influence of the Zen culture from China. It is said that the Kamakura-bori was first created by Buddhist sculptors who were making sculptures and tools in the region.

Our collection

Wood is a traditional Japanese material with warmth. We believe
that the elements of nature in the lacquer and wood of Kamakura-bori add richness and relaxation, and sometimes even energy to
everyday life. HAKKODO has preserved its tradition for about 800years, and has been praised by domestic and international celebrities. In our workshop, skilled craftsmen make special-order items to meet individual requests.
